Bit of a problem

by Adrian on April 11, 2007

On the second day of our trip to Sardinia when it was getting dusk and the sun was setting I put on the navigation lights only to see the light on the control panel flicker, smell a faint burning smell and see the nav lights go out. This could be a bit of as disaster as without them our course and direction would not have been able to be identified correctly by other ships in the dark.

Upon investigation I found a resistor had burnt out on one of the electronic circuit boards. This couldn’t be repaired, but after concentrated half an hour I eventually managed jury rig a fix by wiring the nav light circuit into the stern light system to get things going again.

Fortunately everything seem to be working ok and nothing else was affected – so we have a running fix until a replacement board can be brought from the dealer in the UK.
